Dear All,
It is a sad news to hear the passing of our beloved teacher, Professor Yu. I have to regard myself as extremely lucky to have two extraordinary teachers: The first one was Mr. Xin Zhi-Ping, the principal of Hsin-Chu Middle School, and the second one was Professor Yu.

In addition to be a student in the structural theory class, I served as Professor Yu’s assistant after my graduation for one year (1961-1962). He assigned me some long and difficulty calculation for structural analysis based on moment-distribution method. I struggled through the operations but produced wrong results. He actually checked the details and correct them. I was both ashamed and impressed.

I learned from both the teachers not just knowledge from books, but the attitude toward life: honest, hard working, and be rigorous and meticulous in details in whatever we do. These lessons had benefited me though my life. I sorely missed them but I will cherish their spirits forever.
All the best,
Norden E. Huang

悼念 英文詩作
WHEN I FALL – A PROFESSOR HIT ME WITH A 2X4
By Kun-young Chiu (邱錕源) (2014-6-10)
Don’t sympathize for me or kiss my wound,
Don’t pacify me or drop me a tear
When I fall!
Don’t tease me or laugh at me,
Don’t point at me or step on me
When I fall!

A professor hit me with a two by four,
Academic failure made the fault.
Bitterness not I had toward him at all.
Because he allowed me to learn and to resolve,
His act of kindness was simply a wake up call!

I did stand up with my own, with my own.
Lesson I learned to forget not, to forget not.
Should I fall again, it would be another goof.
A different teacher posed a different pooh,
The degree of pain was not the same,
Yet, my resilience would reveal again.

Forging recovery, I was wiser and mature better.
Forgone my prides, I repeated not the same error.
A new lesson learned; a new blessing earned.
Waited on the path of my life were wise men watching,
Enhance and enrich my knowledge along the way.

Hi, y'all:
Upon receiving Chester's email notified us about Professor C.C. Yu's passing, it prompted me to composed the attached poem (ha, excuse my self glory!). To send or not to send (this email), that is the question (quoted and modified what Hamlet said). Finally, I think I should send it to you all and to express my condones.
I had a lengthy letter written to explain the background of the poem, but it disappeared from my computer either by my inadvertent pushed a wrong button or Prof. Yu, where ever he is, prohibited me to do so. I knew him no better than I knew Mr. Castigliano. I love PCI's "Two Cycle Moment Distribution Method" than I could stand the time consuming Hardy Cross's bookkeeping process that Prof. Yu taught us in his class. I was one of his bottom students who did not enjoy his "Structural Theory" class. Yet ironically, I made my living out of design billion dollar worth of structures and received 25 engineering excellent awards out of 28 recognitions so far by various U.S. Governments, privet sectors, as well as from my peers. I attribute my problem solving abilities to the experience I gained as a carpenter working for my father during my high school and college years, but there should have been some academic solutions coming from Prof. Yu. To that, I said thank you, and solute you, Prof. Yu. Please rest in peace.
Today is Father's Day!! In memory of my father, to all of you and people I met: Happy Father's Day!!

Dear All,
Although we could not physically attend Professor Yu's memorial service, I believe / trust that we all do pay our last tribute / bid good farewell to him inside our heart and cherish the loving memories.

Two things I remember about Professor Yu : (1) In his structural analysis classes, he mentioned quite a few times about the then Taipei Big Bridge (so called in Mandarin臺北大橋) a typical, excellent steel truss bridge model. Every time since I graduated from NTU, when I crossed that bridge, or when I designed a steel truss structure, I always remember what Professor Yu said. Taipei Big Bridge was replaced later and no more exist now. (2) The last time I saw him was in 2010 November in our class re-union in Taipei. Though he didn't remember my name, he shake hands with me enthusiastically, making a big laugh pointing to my mustache. One of the few times that I am glad having a mustache.

Once a while we heard some of our love ones departed and felt so sad. In the meantime we also feel so precious each time when are able together. Hope that we all treasure our days and live each one to its fullest and pray that we'll see each other more often in the years ahead.

God Bless,
